Project Summary

EXTRA-BRAIN (Explainable Trustworthy brain-like AI for Data Intensive Applications) is a Horizon Europe research project developing next-generation brain-inspired artificial intelligence systems. By mimicking the computational principles of the human brain, EXTRA-BRAIN addresses the limitations of current deep learning systems—especially their high data and energy demands, limited adaptability, and lack of transparency.
The project introduces energy-efficient, explainable AI models that are deployable across the edge-cloud continuum, combining innovative neural network architectures with automated data optimisation pipelines and a federated learning framework. These advancements are validated in real-world use cases including robotics, fintech, and telecommunications.
Through co-creation and human-centric design, EXTRA-BRAIN ensures its AI systems align with ethical standards and societal values, supporting trustworthy, transparent, and low-resource AI adoption in Europe and beyond.

Xgility's Contributions to Extra-Brain

Xgility plays a vital role in data pipeline optimisation and system deployment within EXTRA-BRAIN. Our core contributions include:

  • Development of the Data Spine: An advanced data optimisation framework enabling interoperability, feature selection, synthetic data generation, and automated labelling for efficient AI training.
  • Support for secure and federated learning: Xgility enhances privacy-preserving training through integration of federated neuromorphic learning methods.
  • Edge deployment expertise: Leveraging our knowledge of containerisation and orchestration frameworks, Xgility contributes to the flexible deployment of AI models across heterogeneous environments.
